How-To Guides
Restore a Backup

Restore a Backup

Recover your environment from a previous backup.

When to Restore

  • ❌ Accidental data deletion
  • ❌ Bad deployment broke something
  • ❌ Need to rollback changes
  • ❌ Testing with production data (use clone instead)

Step 1: Find Your Backup

  1. Open your environment
  2. Go to Backups tab
  3. Find the backup you want to restore
  4. Check the date and size

Tip: Backups are listed newest first. Look for one from before the problem occurred.

Step 2: Restore the Backup

  1. Click the menu on the backup
  2. Select Restore
  3. Warning: This will overwrite all current data!
  4. Type RESTORE to confirm
  5. Click Confirm Restore

Step 3: Wait for Completion

The restore process:

  1. Stops current environment
  2. Replaces database with backup
  3. Replaces filestore with backup
  4. Restarts environment

Time required: 2-15 minutes depending on backup size.

Step 4: Verify the Restore

  1. Wait for status to return to 🟢 Running
  2. Click your environment URL
  3. Log in and verify:
    • Data is from the correct point in time
    • Files and attachments work
    • No errors in the interface

Restore to Different Environment

Want to restore to staging instead of overwriting production?

Option 1: Clone Then Restore

  1. Clone your environment
  2. On the clone, restore the backup

Option 2: Download and Upload

  1. Download the backup file
  2. Upload to your target environment
  3. Restore from uploaded backup

Important Warnings

⚠️ Data Loss

Restoring overwrites all current data. Everything since the backup is lost.

⚠️ No Undo

Once restored, you cannot undo. Create a backup before restoring if unsure.

⚠️ User Sessions

All users will be logged out. Active work may be lost.

Best Practices

Before Restoring

  1. Create a backup first - In case you need current state
  2. Notify users - They'll lose unsaved work
  3. Pick off-hours - Minimize disruption
  4. Document why - Note the reason for restore

After Restoring

  1. Test thoroughly - Verify everything works
  2. Check integrations - Payment providers, emails, etc.
  3. Inform users - Let them know data state
  4. Create new backup - Mark a clean restore point

Troubleshooting

Restore failed

Common causes:

  • Backup file corrupted
  • Disk space insufficient
  • Network interrupted during restore

Try again, or contact support with the error message.

Environment won't start after restore

  1. Check the Logs tab for errors
  2. Common issues:
    • Addon version mismatch
    • Database migration needed
    • Configuration incompatibility

Data looks wrong

Verify you restored the correct backup:

  1. Check backup timestamp
  2. Compare expected vs actual data
  3. You may have restored wrong backup

Automatic Backups

Don't have a recent backup? Set up automatic backups:

  1. Go to environment SettingsBackups
  2. Enable Automatic Backups
  3. Choose frequency (daily recommended)
  4. Set retention period

Never worry about missing backups again.
