Restore a Backup
Recover your environment from a previous backup.
When to Restore
- ❌ Accidental data deletion
- ❌ Bad deployment broke something
- ❌ Need to rollback changes
- ❌ Testing with production data (use clone instead)
Step 1: Find Your Backup
- Open your environment
- Go to Backups tab
- Find the backup you want to restore
- Check the date and size
Tip: Backups are listed newest first. Look for one from before the problem occurred.
Step 2: Restore the Backup
- Click the ⋮ menu on the backup
- Select Restore
- Warning: This will overwrite all current data!
- Type
RESTOREto confirm - Click Confirm Restore
Step 3: Wait for Completion
The restore process:
- Stops current environment
- Replaces database with backup
- Replaces filestore with backup
- Restarts environment
Time required: 2-15 minutes depending on backup size.
Step 4: Verify the Restore
- Wait for status to return to 🟢 Running
- Click your environment URL
- Log in and verify:
- Data is from the correct point in time
- Files and attachments work
- No errors in the interface
Restore to Different Environment
Want to restore to staging instead of overwriting production?
Option 1: Clone Then Restore
- Clone your environment
- On the clone, restore the backup
Option 2: Download and Upload
- Download the backup file
- Upload to your target environment
- Restore from uploaded backup
Important Warnings
⚠️ Data Loss
Restoring overwrites all current data. Everything since the backup is lost.
⚠️ No Undo
Once restored, you cannot undo. Create a backup before restoring if unsure.
⚠️ User Sessions
All users will be logged out. Active work may be lost.
Best Practices
Before Restoring
- Create a backup first - In case you need current state
- Notify users - They'll lose unsaved work
- Pick off-hours - Minimize disruption
- Document why - Note the reason for restore
After Restoring
- Test thoroughly - Verify everything works
- Check integrations - Payment providers, emails, etc.
- Inform users - Let them know data state
- Create new backup - Mark a clean restore point
Troubleshooting
Restore failed
Common causes:
- Backup file corrupted
- Disk space insufficient
- Network interrupted during restore
Try again, or contact support with the error message.
Environment won't start after restore
- Check the Logs tab for errors
- Common issues:
- Addon version mismatch
- Database migration needed
- Configuration incompatibility
Data looks wrong
Verify you restored the correct backup:
- Check backup timestamp
- Compare expected vs actual data
- You may have restored wrong backup
Automatic Backups
Don't have a recent backup? Set up automatic backups:
- Go to environment Settings → Backups
- Enable Automatic Backups
- Choose frequency (daily recommended)
- Set retention period
Never worry about missing backups again.
